Description
This is an audio recording of an oral history interview. The transcript is available here.
George Roberts was interviewed by Zoe Rhine at his home on April 20, 2004. George Roberts grew up in the West End at 21 Girdwood Street. He talks about the house and that area of town as well as the businesses near the Depot and the liveliness of that area. Mr. Roberts worked first in the pharmacy business and then retired from the Post Office in 1973, serving as Customer Services Representative from Asheville to Murphy. During the interview, he discussed much of Asheville history including his work at the pharmacies and with the Post Office, the 1916 flood, the honey wagon that cleaned out people's outhouses in West Asheville and the depression of the 1930s.
